Problems with my laptop and using an external mouse.

I have purchased a new laptop and i am loving it because it is a lot faster than my old desktop machine was. The only problem i have is that my mouse does not seem to work with it. It is plugged in to one of the usb ports and was the same mouse i used to use before so i know it works. I have been googling why is my optical mouse not working but found far too many results to really find out anything useful. Most people just suggested getting a new one because they are so cheap. I do not want to do this really because it is a good mouse and i am a bit broke after buying this laptop to be honest. I hate using the trackpad on the laptop because i play games on here too and it just does not work well enough for that. I have tried different usb ports and stuff and even went back and tested the mouse to make sure it wasnt me doing something silly.
